½ inch vs ⅝ inch drywall thickness

The most common drywall question is thickness. Residential rule of thumb:

  • ½ in (regular / Type C) — interior walls and ceilings in most rooms. The stock default. The widget assumes ½ in when you select the 4×8 sheet option, because both thicknesses come in the same physical sheet size.
  • ⅝ in (Type X) — required by code on garage walls adjoining living space, on furnace-room ceilings, and on any firewall-rated assembly. Heavier (≈70 lb per 4×8 vs ≈50 lb at ½ in), slower to hang solo.
  • ¼ in (flexible) — only used on curved arches and laminate backing. Not a wall stock.

Thickness never enters the square-foot math. It only changes the sheet’s weight, fire rating, and code-allowed location — pick by room, not because you think one size covers more area than the other.

4x8 vs 4x12 sheets

Both come in identical square-foot bricks (32 sq ft for 4×8, 48 sq ft for 4×12). The trade is seam count against handling weight:

  • 4×8 — the residential default, light enough for one person to ceiling by themselves. One more seam every 8 ft to tape and finish.
  • 4×12 — fewer seams on long runs or big ceilings. Heavier (4×12 at ½ in is ≈75 lb). Two-person lift minimum.
